Three Truths

There were always three truths I knew growing up:
1. My mother would die while I was young (she passed away while I was 29).
2. My grandmother would outlive every doctor's words when he said "you won't live out the year" (she has been told this five times in my life, the last one four years ago).
3. I would die before I turned thirty.
Today I turn thirty-one (yes, I'm not really five, I'm just immature), and while I did make that one false, it almost wasn't, after mum passed.
I'm so glad I turned thirty-one, instead of another year in the grave.

Date: 2012-01-23 02:55 pm (UTC)I'm mostly still into the fantasy genre, fed nicely with recommendations from the folks that do the Sirens conferece. It's a women and fantasy event, done by the same ladies who did the Witching Hour, Terminus and Phoenix RisingHarry Potter conferences. Asuming I make it there this year, it'll be my (and their) 4th year of Sirens. This year it's moved out of Colorado and up near Portland. Probably be a bitch for the cost of airfare, but beats taking the bus on that one!

Date: 2012-01-24 03:23 pm (UTC)Yeah, I've dropped out of the fantasy world for a bit until the dragon craze dies down. Nothing against them, just not interested. and I'm definetely staying away from my main genre of vampires until You-Know-Who stops writing. It's sad, there are no decent vampire writers these days (then again, my own WiP contains incest and violence against the church as well as screwing with religion so there you go, people will probably say the same about me).
I've also been into Dan Brown lately. Granted, his works are utter rubbish in terms of facts, but he does tell a decent story, and I like a decent mystery with a bit of conspiricy (the loonier the better).
I would recommend arsene Lupin over Sherlock Holmes, much more fun. But if you do choose Sherlock, a good one is Hounds of Baskerville.

Date: 2012-01-25 11:35 pm (UTC)I'm not big into the dragon stories, with the exception of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. I can't recall how I ended up reading the first one, but I've made through the third and they're quite appealing. Maybe because they're more historical military stories, set during the Mapoleonic war, with the military using dragons. No fluff or magic involved, really.
I read the first of the Twilight series and it made my eyes and my brain bleed. I wanted to go through the book again with a red pen, but that would have meant reading it twice and I wasn't willing to torture myself any further. :) You WiP sounds much better.
I've read a couple Dan Brown. I have the Lost Symbol on the e-reader and I'll get to eventually. Thanks for the tip on reading Lupin and Holmes.
