Lost Dreamns–Letter to the Editor

I’ve planned my dream wedding since I was five. I have it all planned, invitations, cake, heck I even know what flatware to use. I’m twenty-three now, and I’m watching those dreams go up in flames. All because I’m a lesbian, a second class citizen.
Measure 36 takes away my right, maybe not to marry, but the legal rights that come with such an act. The right of inheritance, of kinship. Of being married in every legal sense.
For a moment, imagine with me, if someone told you that you were not allowed to marry your wife or husband. That it was illigal to share that moment of happiness where you pledge your love to them. That you had no standing in their life beyond a live in partner.
Now, imagine how you would react. Would you be upset? Would you fight? or would you just accept it? Accept that you’re not worthy. That your love, is not worthy, for that honor.
Please vote No on Measure 36, if not for me, then for that five year old girl who has dreams of walking down the isle on the day when her fairy tale comes true, and saying “I do”.
Because she’s out there, waiting on your vote.
