From FF.N's front page:

In addition, FanFiction.Net would like to address a growing problem. For whatever reason, some writers feel it's okay to copy-n-paste musical lyrics they have not written into their fiction. If you did not write it, do not post it. This has always been our policy. Please remove these entries immediately to avoid account closure.

Well, there goes about half of my HP stories, including "The End of the Beginning" and "Weather is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful".

Bastards.

Ah well, I'm taking a stand and NOT removing my works. They can ban me to their ickle hearts content. I do NOT want to see my story count cut in half because they get a hair up their arse about this now. I have a song fic in every fandom I write for and that's ten fandoms.

*grumbles and clings to stories* MY song fics, damnit!

How do they know if you didn't write a song or not? Perhaps you DO happen to be the song writer, posting a fanfiction under a pen name? I mean, honestly, are they going to look it up? (wait, this is FF.N, they're going to ban you without thought).

I'm getting tired of FF.N being little shits that bow to the slightest whim and apparently have no backbone what so ever to stand up and say "No." to something. If several lone website designers and authors can withstand the WB's C&D sprees without caving (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter fansite shut downs), I think a group of administrators can withstand a few puny threats that have no basis and a few bitchy ass parents who have no idea what Net Nanny and Parental Controls are (dude, I have these on my TV and I don't have kids, I just baby-sit, it's not that hard to figure out I swear!).

Ugh!

*stabs FF.N with a dull knife* DIE!

Yeah, their vague message utterly sucks. Why couldn't they be more specific - like telling us whether it's okay to quote a line or two of a song in the beginning, or if that's OMG NOT FAIR USE!1!!!! either?

Damn, that would mean my Common Ground is about to be eaten by ff.net monsters.

In other news, wuv that icon.

Is it still not okay to write a song-fic, even if you give the other people credit for writing it? That doesn't make any sense! Not like it matters anyway...they've banned lemons and yet people still write them. Although their threats aren't entirely empty, they don't hold very much water, if you know what I mean.

I realize that they ban you (hence why my ratings are SO high when they don't need to be)...but really...it seems not right that they would ban a *song*fic since there are SO many of them out there.

I recently emailed them asking the, perameters?, of the 'ban' on using song lyrics. I wanted to clarify if they were just talking songfics themselves or if it included(like some of my fics)a line or two of lyrics/poetry to set the mood/set a theme.
Here's what they said:

It doesn't matter how you use it. If you didn't write it, you should
not use it. The exception would be public domain works such as Shakespeare and Mark Twain of which you can use however you like.

It seems to me FF.net is into self-sabotage. As anything in the fanfiction realm is already using something 'you didn't write.' So it seems totally contradictory *shrugs*
But I'm with Saitaina, I'm not taking anything down. If they want to get rid of me, they'll ban me or whatever. I'll just find somewhere else to post

actually... you own the copyright to the fic, not the song. if you're the song writer, you can email them personally and keep your works safe. if you're the song writer.

lyrics are owned by the record labels. if ffn is getting any money from existing, which is possible by way of ads and whatnot, it's liable to be sued for having copyrighted material in their service. we all know the record companies are dickheads. fuck, they sued a twelve year old! talk about fucking heartless. ffn probably, and understandably, doesn't want to dip into any pockets they may have to pay a settlement. and the record companies won't stop until they're making money off having their lyrics in peoples' fiction. why? cause their greedy mucus worms.
