Since voting has come and mostly gone for us in Riddle, we’re getting ready for the election two years from now. We have a mayor we hate. He’s been our mayor pretty much since I moved here twelve years ago. NO ONE likes him. Only reason he’s still in office is because no ne runs against him. He doesn’t do anything for our town, every time we have an event (Havest Moon Festival and Sawdust) he leaves town. We had a statewide mayoral confrence ONE TOWN over (like fifteen miles away) and he refused to attend (every other mayor in the state attended…but ours).

But this time…we have a canidate being endorsed to run against him. Backed by two buisness owners and several towns members. This should be good right? A clean fight to change the rut the towns in.

But…theres a problem.

I’m the canidate.

This is what I’ve dreamed of. The first steps I laid years ago when I had dreams of a white house job. Mayor, County Comish, State Rep, Govener, Senator, President. So I should be happy with idea and moving full steam ahead.

I cannot be mayor and still be on social security. I cannot refuse to be paid as mayor, and be on social security. So I can either be mayor…or not and still have the income I get as being disabled.

So now I have a choice, one I have to make soon in order to start the campaign. So do I do what is right (for my city, for my backers, for my friends and family) or do I do the selfish thing and keep the income that’s guarnteed to me and let the city continue to crumble?

I don’t even know how to BE mayor. I mean, I have the basics, you run the city, keep the buget balanced, pray you don’t need more taxes, attempt to keep the service workers from killing each other. In addition, for my city I have to stop the city from alinating the volinteer fire department. Keep police activly patroling the city, instatue city clean up and after school programs, make sure two well known festaviles go smoothly and dont’ conflict with one another in such a way that the fire department burns the city to the ground in a fit of anger (they run Harvest Moon while the city runs Sawdust…it’s a huge mess). Plus figure out a way to rid the city of drugs and crime, both of which are on the rise. Er…how?

*bangs head on desk* Why did they have to choose me? Okay yes I’ve been running for elected offices since I was old enough to put pen to paper and write a speech…and my last race was so close I think I lost by two votes, but this isn’t a school election. This is the big time where I can seriously screw up. Not to mention, if I run and win…can I handle having the fate of a city of 10,000 (most of that cows) in my hands?

I know nothing about PR so I don’t know where to begin on that. I know nothing about public speaking beyond that I hate it. I just know I want to do what’s best for my city and make it better. I want to stop this man that’s done everything to destroy what we work for and I want to give this city a mayor it can be proud of.
