A debating point–

The following message was posted to one of my Yahoogroups. Instead of discussing it onlist, I decided to move the discussion here as these are my opinions and those who don’t want to read them should nto be forced. Please note I go way off tangent and into a rant. Funny to watch though..well, read.
The original message–THE LAW IS THE LAW
So Be It!
THE LAW IS THE LAW
So if the US government determines that it is against the law for the words “under God” to be on our money, then, so be it.
And if that same government decides that the “Ten Commandments” are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.
And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it.
I say, “so be it,” because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen.
I say, “so be it,” because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions! to make good decisions.
I would like to think that those people have the American Publics’ best interests at heart.
BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I’D LIKE?
Since we can’t pray to God, can’t Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don’t believe the Government and it’s employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.
I’d like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter.
After all, it’s just another day.
I’d like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday,
Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it’s just another day.
I’d like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the “Christmas Break.” After all it’s just another day.
I’m thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter.
It shouldn’t cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be “politically correct”.
In fact….I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God…) because after all our service men and women must work and our government says that it should be just another day….
What do you all think???? If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the majority of ALL of the American people.
SO BE IT………..
Please Dear Lord, Give us the help needed to keep you in our country!
‘Amen’ and ‘Amen’
And my reply—
I want so badly to comment on this, but I don’t want anything to be taken wrong….ah well, I’ll say my say and hopefully it’ll come out right.
I read the original message several times, and while it’s cute and poinent, I do have some points-
First, er…Thanksgiving isn’t a religious holiday…can’t people take it off?
Secondly, I’m all for fredom of religion, to practice however and wherever you want to. If you want to bend knee in the middle of school or the mall and pray, have at it. I just think that EVERYONE should be granted this right, not just the majority. Which is why I’m in favor of no OFFICIAL prayer in schools, ect. Which IS the rule. You can pray privately all you want, you just can’t be lead officially in prayer.
As for getting holidays off (and Sundays), most major Christian holidays occur alongside other religeous holidays. Sometimes they alternate, but often they’re very close to each other. This is why you get WINTER and SPRING vacations or days off. So that you can celebrate how you choose. Yes, a majority of them fall on Christina holidays, but they are in essence, time off for celebrations of the season, whatever they may be. By the way, tax payer dollars would NOT be saved by working these days, as we have to pay for the thousands of workers who would have to work.
But the whole point is, this is another argument over majority and minority, rights versus respect. When our country was founded there were several key issues our ancestors wanted, things they longed for. The right to practice religion of choice was one of them.
I dont’ care who you are, what you do, or what you bend knee to. I just care that people have faith (even athiests have the faith that nothing beyond them exists). I DO care, when a group of loud mouthed individuales attempt to ram “their” God down my throat, force me into their rules, and then berate me when I insist on puruing my own faith.
I’m an Americn. I have the right to bend knee to a purple grasshopper if I choose. I have the right, to sit here and enjoy the love of the gods *I* belive in. And I have the right, to want to be treated fairly, even if I am a minority in religeon. I dont’ belive in sin, I don’t belive in hell, I dont’ belive in a devil and I sure as fuck don’t belive in a god who would punish me for the slightest mistake.
I walk daily in the lover of the mother and father who created me. I grow, I learn, I scream, I curse, I cry out in pain to them, and they are still here to guide me. I fight, for the right to worship how I choose because we are a country of freedom. I pray for petty things, and I pray for the things I should pray for. I give thanks at major intervals for all the gifts I have recived…and I sleep in on Sunday.
So stop worrying about my soul, stop telling me how hottly I’ll burn when I die. I don’t give a fuck.
And stop bemoaning the changing of our world because it’s a good thing to allow everyone to belive in what they want. Maybe…instead of bitching about a line that isn’t even original to the document it was written in, you start looking at the WORD, and start living them. Instead of bemoaning the loss of ten lines on a stone slab, you stop stairing at your neighbors knew care with green jaded eyes.
