He stood on the battlements of the castle, watching the wind blowing through the flags on the tower below him, rustling the trees below. He had seen many years in his time as servant to Princess Peach. Her highness had a knack for trouble, and as often as that trouble followed her, it followed her consort even more.

He sighed, carefully sitting himself on the edge of the castle, tossing a rock over the edge, watching as it skipped off the lower tower and into the pond, making a merry splash that did little to improve his mood. He didn't know why the dark mood descended on him, after all, it was a nice day, the sun was shining, birds were singing...

And no one had attempted to kidnap the Princess in two weeks.

All in all, it was a rather good day, but still, something felt...off. He didn't know what it was, or where it came from, but he couldn't stop looking over his shoulder, waiting for...

For...

for something.

He sighed again, kicking his small feet, removing his cap and scratching the stump of his head before replacing the floppy red and white polka-dotted cap, fluffing it back into it's perfect shape before laying back, closing his eyes as the sun beat down on him.

A shadow crossed over him and he blinked, looking up, staring up into his Princess' face. "Your highness," he said, struggling to sit back up. "What would you wish of me?"

"Relax, Toad," Peach said, smiling as she took as seat, toeing off her slippers and pulling off her gloves, stretching her fingers to relax them after too long at the spinning wheel. "What's wrong?"

"Wrong, your highness? Nothing is wrong."

"I have known you since you were the smallest of toadstool's, Toad. I can tell when something is wrong. The left side of your smile is not as higher as the right."

Toad gave a weak grin, before looking back over the field below the castle. "It's nothing, your highness, I'm just...something feels wrong."

"Wrong?"

"Something just feels...off, the air is still, there's a pressure..."

"Ah, that wrong," she said, nodding. "It's strange, isn't it?"

"What is?"

"The silence, the deep, echoing pressure that builds int your chest, waiting for a release."

"You feel it to, your highness?"

She nodded, smiling down at her oldest friend. "I feel it daily, building and building, waiting inside me, waiting for...something, to happen."

"How do you deal with it, your highness?"

"I breathe, and I live. I take each moment at a time, waiting for the anticipation to end, for the preassure to vanish. It's hard, leaving a peaceful and normal life, when everything you know is based on chaos and adventure." She reached out, taking his hand. "It will get easier, weither or not something happens, each day makes it easier to breath. Eventually, eventually the pain and darkness will vanish. "

"Promise?"

"I swear it, and I never break a vow."

Toad smiled, a real, honest smile before struggling to his feet, helping his Princess up as best he could, considering how short he was. "What do you think of a picnic, your highness? It is a rather nice day."

"That it is, Toad, that it is." She smiled and slipped back on her gloves and slippers, before taking his hand and following him back into the castle.
