Three Truths

There were always three truths I knew growing up:

1. My mother would die while I was young (she passed away while I was 29).

2. My grandmother would outlive every doctor's words when he said "you won't live out the year" (she has been told this five times in my life, the last one four years ago).

3. I would die before I turned thirty.

Today I turn thirty-one (yes, I'm not really five, I'm just immature), and while I did make that one false, it almost wasn't, after mum passed.

I'm so glad I turned thirty-one, instead of another year in the grave.

Portland, OR. Maine would be a snap for me to get to and would give me a choice of bus or flying. The cool thing about Sirens is that each year has a theme and things center around that. The first year it was warriors, then faeries, last year was monsters and this year is tales re-told. There have been so many retellings of various fairy and folktales that I'm really interested in seeing what the program will look like. There are usually some good writers workshops, which is why Amanda (from HPFGU) brings her daughter Kasia, the budding author. The guest speakers don't just show up and do a presentation. They're there all weekend and, depending on the author, generally hanging about with the rest of the attendees.

I'm not big into the dragon stories, with the exception of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. I can't recall how I ended up reading the first one, but I've made through the third and they're quite appealing. Maybe because they're more historical military stories, set during the Mapoleonic war, with the military using dragons. No fluff or magic involved, really.

I read the first of the Twilight series and it made my eyes and my brain bleed. I wanted to go through the book again with a red pen, but that would have meant reading it twice and I wasn't willing to torture myself any further. :) You WiP sounds much better.

I've read a couple Dan Brown. I have the Lost Symbol on the e-reader and I'll get to eventually. Thanks for the tip on reading Lupin and Holmes.

Geeze, four more hours and you could visit me in Riddle *grins*

I just never seem to have time to really read anymore...or write. Then again, everything I DO write I end up deleting so maybe there are other issues going on in my head, but they haven't made themselves known to my concious thought so who knows *shrugs*

If I had the time, I'd love to. I am considering flying to Vegas and then on to Portland, depending on the fares. Sometimes when I check it's cheaper to do that. I've also considered flying to Vegas and taking Greyhound to Portland. I guess it will all depend on how much time/money I have at the time and how much airfares are.
